General Information:
Reminder: NCA Graduation Attendance.
In order to help us facilitate more positive community relations, anyone coming to the NCA graduation ceremony that does notlive at Lapilo Center (or its guest facilities) will be required to present an NCA-produced invitation at the main gate upon arrival. (This personalized invitation is notthe same thing as the announcements and picture cards produced by the NCA Senior Class.) This applies to everyonecoming from off-center (Sobega, town, etc.). Families with children at NCA will automatically be receiving personalized invitations for each family member within the next couple of weeks. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Please contact us if you have any questions.

WASC Follow-Up.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in the WASCvisit last week. The team completed their report and made many helpful recommendations to the school. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of their report, our own NCA Self-Study, or the power point presentation from the evening meeting, contact the high school office.

Forms.

Spiritual Goal. Our spiritual goal for this month is Faithfulness. As we all encounter transitions in these coming days we can be assured of God’s faithfulness and commitment to us and we can also focus on our faithfulness or devotion to Him. Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Psalm 36:5

The NCA ABCD’s:
A – Academics
B – Biblical Worldview
C – Changes
D – Diversity and Teamwork

General Information:

Transitions Week.
We are grateful once again to have Britt Hemphill (former NCA teacher/administrator) from NTM Families in Ministry at MTC, join us later this month for several MK Transitions seminars. In additionto his work with our high school students, Britt will be conducting two seminars for parents. Here are the details:

Feb 19. 7 p.m. Conference Dining Area.
Transitions issues for parents of children of all ages

Feb 21.7 p.m. Conference Dining Area.
Transitions issues for parents of HS Juniors and Seniors

Parents, we would strongly encourage you to mark these dates on your calendar and attend the appropriate seminar(s). We believe that you will find the information that Britt will be sharing extremely valuable.

Tournament Dates.
Because the EHS Secondary Sports Association is not up and running for the new year, the dates for Term 3 tournaments are uncertain. The most probably dates are an invitational tournament on February 23, and EHSSA Provincial Tournament on March 1. But these dates are not nailed down, nor are the venues for either event totally sorted out. Please stay tuned. We will send out more information as it becomes available.

Faculty In-service:
Monday February 11 is a half-day staff in-service. Students will be dismissed at lunch, and there will be no school in the afternoon. High school will hold periods 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 in the morning.
Elementary:

Games Night:
Friday, February 8 is Games Night
Grades 1 & 2 Gym 7:00 – 8:00
Grades 3 & 4 Sports Complex * 7:00 – 8:15
Grades 5 & 6 Conference Dining Hall 7:00 – 8:30
*If it is raining then the gym will be shared with Grades 1 & 2 and Grades 3 & 4.

Reading Festival continues through to February 6.
Come to the Elementary Assembly on Feb. 6 at 8:00 am and see the Living Book Reports from the kindergarten class and grades 3 and 4 and to enjoy the unveiling of our newest Cougar Cliffhanger … Diary of C. Cougar.

Spiritual Goal:
In February we will begin our new Spiritual Goal: Love. Whoever loves God must also love his brother. 1 John 4:21

Dress Code Reminder:
Just a reminder that on Wednesdays girls should be wearing a dress or a skirt and boys should have a shirt with a collar.

High School:

SEW Billing.
Because it takes some time for charges to settle in the account, SEW billing is somewhat delayed from the actual event. High school students ended up being about $124 each and junior high students around $20 each. We did not want you to be surprised when you saw these charges on your statement/invoice.
Thank you.

SAT on May 4.
In 2013, NCA will be hosting the SAT college entry exam in May as well as in November. You should register online for the SAT at sat.collegeboard.com. The registration deadline for the May exam is April 5. However, we would recommend you registering well inadvance of the deadline. For more information, contact Neil Burleson at the high school.

General Information:

Pray for 2013-14 staffing.
We would appreciate your prayers for staff for NCA for 2013-14. Particularly, pray for John and Amber Adams and Abigail Snyder who are attempting to raise sufficient financial support. We also have needs in music, art, industrial arts, Spanish, and (potentially) one elementary grade.

Elementary:
Reading Festival - Reading Festival begins January 23 and ends February 6. Information regarding the specific activities will be coming home with the students. This is a fun time for the students and an opportunity for you to get involved. We can use some volunteer help during Reading Festival, especially during recess (from 10:10 – 10:30) when the students are busy in the library with various projects. Another area you can help is by being a “Mystery Reader” for a classroom. If you can help in the library or by being a Mystery Reader, please contact Deena Hendrickson at nca-elem-lib@ntm.org.pg*protected email**protected email* or phone 576. Thanks!

Assembly– You won’t want to miss the assembly on January 23 at 8:00 a.m. when grades 1, 2, 5, and 6 will be presenting their Living Book Reports.

Lice Check – On Friday, January 11 the school nurse will be checking the elementary students for lice. A note will come home with your child if you need to treat for lice.
Spiritual Goal– Our spiritual goal to start off the new calendar year is “Jesus 1st… Jesus, Others, You”. As we make it our goal to Please God, we want to make sure to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind” (Matt. 22:37-38) and honor others above ourselves (Rom. 12:10).

Adding or dropping courses.
Grade 9-12 students may now add or drop courses for second semester. The “add” deadline is Friday, January 11th at 4 p.m. The “drop” deadline is Wednesday, January 30 at 4 p.m. Students are required to carry 6 credits for the year (including correspondence courses).
Reminder! Items left outside.
Because of the high cost of replacing instruments, textbooks, etc., any items that belong to the school (textbooks, calculators, instruments, etc.) that are left outside after hours will be held in the office and subject to a K5 fine and then returned to the student. Items that belong to students are not subject to a fine, and will continue to be put in the lost and found or held in the office (in the case of valuables, eye glasses, etc.) Please remind your kids to keep track of the items for which they are responsible. Thanks.

Post-High School planning meeting.
A Post-HS planning meeting is scheduled for January17 at 7 p.m. in room M3. The primary focus of this meeting is college / university entrance considerations. While we strongly encourage all 11th grade students (and their parents) to attend, anyone is welcome, particularly 10th grade students (or parents) who want to get a head start on college preparations.

In 2010, the accrediting team challenged our school to consider the our guiding principles (the expected results from our activities as a school). Actions and words come from the overflow of our hearts as Jesus shared in the Sermon on the Mount (Luke 6:43-45). In response to the challenge, the NCA staff developed four main expected results that we desire each student in every grade to learn during his or her time at NCA.

Numonohi ABCDs – the heart that guides the actions of the school

A – Academics

In Proverbs 22:6, we are told to “Train up [exercise vigorously] a child in the way he should go.” Developing a strong academic foundation provides training for our children to think, to solve problems, and to communicate effectively.

B – Biblical Worldview

Our desire as a Christian academy is that all of our training is grounded on a biblical foundation. Just as Jesus “came down from heaven – not to do [his own] will, but to do the will of Him Who sent [him]” (John 6:38), we desire that all aspects of our students’ lives be grounded in the will of God which is communicated to us through His word.

C – Changes

We know as Christians our lives will include many changes or transitions as we take up our crosses daily and follow Him (Luke 9:23). Our students face changes developmentally, in the peer groups they encounter, in their spiritual development, and in the place they call “home”. As a school, we seek to be a source of instruction and help through those changes.

D – Diversity

The body of Christ is made up of many different parts that work together in unity (1 Cor. 12:12). We want our students to value diversity in our learning styles, home countries, native languages, church and family backgrounds, abilities and much, much more. We desire for students to value the uniqueness of God’s creative work in each individual while also pursuing the power that comes from unifying those different gifts in teamwork.

As the community looks at Numonohi Christian Academy, we hope they will see the overflow of its heart in the development of each child in his or her academics, biblical worldview, ability to face changes, and value of diversity

General Information:
In-service November 12th
A teacher in-service is scheduled for Nov. 12. School will dismiss at lunch. Grades 7-12 will have periods 1-3 and 6-7 on that day.

Travel Assistance Fund.
We would like to remind you about the travel assistance fund to financially assist families who face significant travel expenses to send their children to NCA (i.e., boarding students). This fund is being used by some of our families and is available for donations for those who would like to contribute. If you are interested in this giving opportunity or would like more information, contact Scott at the high school office. Thank you for your consideration.

Elementary:
Mid-Marking Period ends November 7. Some of the elementary classes will be having Parent/Teacher Conferences November 12-16. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you if this is the case.

Elementary Assembly. The next Elementary Assembly is scheduled for November 21 at 8:00 a.m. Our current spiritual goal is “Humility”. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

Transitions.
One of our goals at NCA is to try to assist our students with major transitions in their lives. As MKs, most of our students will face big transitions at one point or another. If your family is anticipating a major transition coming up, please let our teachers know. We have materials that can be used to help your children prepare for that transition. We also can recommend books that can be used as a family to discuss some of the issues that you will face.

Jr. & Sr. High:
SAT.
The SAT will be held on Saturday, November 3 at the high school from 8 am until 1 pm. Students should arrive at 7:45am and bring their admission document, a calculator, and at least two soft-lead pencils. Snacks or drinks (including water) are not allowed in the testing area. (They can be left at the side of the room for consumption during the breaks.) Lapilo residents, please be mindful of noise in the vicinity of the high school (including the sports field) during this time. If you have any questions, please contact Neil at the high school.

Tournaments.
The EHSSA Tournament will be held on November 9 at NSI in Goroka. Grades 9-12 are dismissed from school on this day. Grade 7&8 classes will continue as normal. In addition, an Invitational tournament will be held at NCA on Saturday, November 24. If you have any questions, contact Paul McKnight.

Class Meetings.
Beginning this month (November 16), class meetings for Grades 7-10 will be held on Friday afternoons instead of Thursdays in order to avoid conflicts with the band program.
