News & Notes: February 2014

General Information:

Tournament Dates. Because the EHP Secondary Sports Association is not up and running for the new year, the date for Term 3 tournaments is actually at the start of term 4. The EHSSSA Provincial Tournament is on March 28.

The date for the NCA Invitational Tournament is Friday, February 28.  There will be no classes on this day.

Term 4 Start Date: Due to the fact that we are hosting invitational tournament on a Friday (hoping to draw more teams), we will lose a day of school in Term 3.  To make up for this day, we will be starting Term 4 on March 25 rather than the 26th.

NCA Transitions Week: We are having a great week of transitions sessions and have been privileged to have Libby Stephens here to share with us. Thanks Libby!  It has been encouraging to see a good turn-out for our sessions and we trust that those who have attended have gained some good insights into some of the issues related to making the transitions that come with living in PNG.  We would like to take an offering to help off-set some of the expenses related to binging Libby over to run our transitions program this year.  If you would like to help, you can bring your contribution to the HS office, or email Erica Dorsey (gp.gr1513448844o.mtn1513448844@acn1513448844) and she can do an account transfer.  Thanks for your investment in our kids!

Faculty In-service: Monday, February 10, is a half-day staff in-service.  Students will be dismissed at lunch, and there will be no school in the afternoon. High school will hold periods 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 in the morning.

Looking ahead to next year:  These are the term dates for the 2014-2015 school year:

Term 1              July 30 – Sept. 24

Term 2              Oct. 15 – Dec. 17

Term 3              Jan. 14 – Mar. 18

Term 4              Apr. 8 – June 3

Elementary:

Special Elementary Assembly: Friday, February 7, 11:15 – 12:00 in the Conference Dining Hall.   Libby Stephens will be talking with our elementary students about the basics of being a Third Culture Kid and also what it feels like to be the “new kid”.  Parents are welcome to attend this special assembly!

Games NightFriday, February 7 is Games Night

Grades 1 & 2                     Gym                                    7:00 – 8:00

Grades 3 & 4                     Sports Complex *               7:00 – 8:15

Grades 5 & 6                     Conference Dining Hall         7:00 – 8:30

*If it is raining then the gym will be shared with Grades 1 & 2 and Grades 3 & 4.

Reading Festival runs from Feb. 12 – 26.  Information will be coming home soon giving details about all the activities.  Be sure to come to the assemblies on Feb. 12th and 26th to see the Living Book Reports and hear what the students are doing.

High School:

SEW Billing. Because it takes some time for charges to settle in the account, SEW billing is somewhat delayed from the actual event. High school students ended up being about $70 to $80 each and junior high students around $20 to $30 each. We did not want you to be surprised when you saw these charges on your statement/invoice. Thank you.

SAT on May 3.  In 2014, NCA will be hosting the SAT college entry exam in May as well as in November. You should register online for the SAT at sat.collegeboard.com. The registration deadline for the May exam is April 4.  However, we would recommend you registering well in advance of the deadline. For more information, contact Jed Appell at the high school.
