General Goals: To teach drafting, tool identification, and proper use of power tools and to complete two or more projects with increasing skill level throughout the year
Goals By Term
Term 1 – Drafting course –realize the importance of and draw a Plan of Procedure, view demonstrations of equipment and tools, pass a safety test, begin required project
Term 2 – Finish remaining power tool safety tests, continue the required project, and observe demonstrations of a working lathe or leather working tools, begin second project (student’s choice) as time allows
Term 3 – Continue projects (increasing difficulty), pass a Plan of Procedure test
Term 4 – Continue and finish all projects
Additional information:
Students will complete one required project and one project of the student’s choice. A non-scored test will be given on the location of tools, storage of projects, supplies, safety equipment, cleaning supplies, etc. This is to facilitate a clean, safe environment in which each tool is returned to its proper place, projects are stored safely, and knowledge of supplies is common to all students.
Any second year students will receive a review of use and safety for each tool and will be encouraged to begin more difficult projects. The instructor may assign a more difficult required project for the student to complete. Skills that may be incorporated for the second year student include the use of jigs, table saw, router, time saving devices, and lathe techniques.
General Goals: To introduce students to cooking and sewing principles and skills that will prepare them for living on their own during years at college or home countries
Goals By Term
Term 1 –
To do the following:
- Gain a general overview of cooking essentials: terms, abbreviations, measurement, food handling & cleanliness
- Prepare students to be able to cook something in almost every category: breads, eggs, meat (chicken, beef, pork), vegetables (including salads and dressings), sauces, desserts (custards, cakes, pies & cookies) and drinks
Additional information: The students will be graded on the creation and maintenance of a notebook including recipes and other information, two quizzes, and a final project in which the student prepares a well-rounded meal for their family. The final project is graded by their family according to a pre-determined rubric.
Term 2 –
Sewing – introduction to sewing by hand and by machine, demonstrating their proficiency by completing three sewing projects, introduction to crochet (as time allows)
Additional information: The students will be taught to sew, by hand (buttons, whip stitch, long hem stitch, blanket stitch etc.), and by machine (1st apron, 2nd pillow case, 3rd students choice.)
Texts: Photoshop Elements 5.0, Photoshop Elements 5.0 instructional DVD, various photography guides and handouts, yearbook camera
General Goals: To introduce students to basic photography techniques, increase proficiency in taking pictures necessary to ‘cover’ an event, gain proficiency in the use of Photoshop Elements as a photo editing software, and create a professional quality yearbook accurately representing NCA as a whole
Goals By Term
Term 1 – Learn basic photography terms and techniques, be introduced to Photoshop Elements 5.0, receive yearbook page assignment, take photos, begin pages
Term 2 – Choose yearbook theme and dedication, refine photography skills, take photos, schedule school picture day, continue pages
Term 3 – Take photos, continue pages, finalize yearbook format
Term 4 – Finish all pages and format yearbook, order and ship yearbook, distribute yearbook at Award’s Night
