Science
Texts: ACSI Purposeful Design 4 & 5.
General Goals: Students will explore the following sciences: Earth & Space Science, Human Body, Life Science, & Physical Science.

Term 1 – Life Science: Stability, Design of Life, Order of Life, Diversity of Life, and System of Life using Grade 4 text.
Term 2 – Physical Science: Energy, Energy and Heat, Light and Sound, Motion and Force, Matter and Its Uses using Grade 4 text.
Term 3 – Earth Science: Predictability, Earth Processes, Natural Resources, Weather and Climate, Sun, Earth, and Moon using Grade 5 text.
Term 4 – Human Body: Balance, Transition, Disease using Grade 5 text.

Term 1 –Earth and Space Science: Balance, Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, & Universe using Grade 4 text.
Term 2 – Human Body: Wellness, Body Systems: Cardiac and Digestive using Grade 4 text.
Term 3 – Life Science: Cycles, Life cycles, Cells, Ecological Seccession using Grade 5 text.
Term 4 – Physical Science: Transformations, Measuring Matter, Changing Matter, Force and Work, Electricity and Magnetism using Grade 5 text.
Language Arts
- Reading: Students will read grade level material fluently with expression, taking punctuation into account. Comprehension will be demonstrated through responding to questions in sentences and simple paragraphs, demonstrating general knowledge and comprehension, application, and simple analysis of similarities and differences. Students will read in a variety of genres.
- Writing: Students will demonstrate informative, narrative, descriptive, persuasive and poetry writing. Students will produce papers of at least 1-page length in cursive, using the writing process of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.
- Grammar: Students will identify the subject and predicate of simple and complex sentences and will learn the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, and the proper use of end punctuation and some uses of the comma.
- Spelling: Students will be taught spelling based on phonetic families and spelling rules.
- General: Given oral presentation of subject matter, students will identify and share main points, and copy from visually presented material. Students will participate in classroom and small group discussion with relevance. Students will give oral reports of 3-4 minutes.

- WRITING: Excellence in Writing – Student Writing Intensive Level A.
- HANDWRITING: Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Grade 4 and 5.

- READING: Mr. Popper’s Penguins – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide. Also introduce writing a book report.
- SPELLING: units 1-8.
- GRAMMAR: Cover Prepositions and the Capitalization Rules.
- WRITING: Introduce Key Word Outlines, Dress-ups: who/which clause, -ly words and strong verbs.
- HANDWRITING: First half of the handwriting book.
Term 2 –
- READING: Farmer Boy – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide. Students will do a book report on a book of choice.
- SPELLING: Units 9-17.
- GRAMMAR: Cover Verbs.
- WRITING: Continue with Key Word Outlines, Dress-ups: all five.
- HANDWRITING: Second half of the handwriting book.
Term 3 –
- READING: The Whipping Boy – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide. Students will do a book report on a book of choice.
- SPELLING: Units 18-26.
- GRAMMAR: Nouns and Adjectives.
- WRITING: Story Writing.
- HANDWRITING: Focus on transitioning to small lined paper (like notebook paper). How to write smaller and neater, but not too small.
Term 4 –
- READING: Island of the Blue Dolphins – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide.
- SPELLING: Units 27-34.
- GRAMMAR: Cover Adverbs, Pronouns, Punctuation.
- WRITING: Research Writing.
- HANDWRITING: Focus on Handwriting in every day use.

General Goals: The Bible curriculum is guided by the ACSI Bible materials for Grade 5 – Christ and My Choices. This is an Old Testament overview, focusing on the lives of Old Testament characters and the choices they made—whether right or wrong. People to be studied include: Joseph, Samuel, Moses, David, Joshua, Solomon, Deborah, Daniel, Samson, Jeremiah, and Ruth. Students will learn the NCA Questions and Answers through 91 and memorize selected verses.
