Curriculum Scope & Sequence – 6th Grade
Language Arts
Texts:
- READING: Progeny Press Study Guides are used for each term’s novel unit. With the exception of term 4, each novel has been chosen to supplement our social studies unit of U.S. history. A read aloud book has also been chosen for each term to further supplement the social studies curriculum.
- Term 1: Witch of Blackbird Pond. Read Aloud: Journey to the New World by Kathryn Lasky.
- Term 2: Johnny Tremain. Read Aloud: Standing in the Light by Mary Pope Osborne.
- Term 3: Amos Fortune Freeman. Read Aloud: Lyddie by Katherine Patterso
- Term 4: Number the Stars. Read Aloud: The Ballad of Lucy Whipple by Karen Cushman.
- SPELLING: Houghton Mifflin Spelling and Vocabulary Level 6
- GRAMMAR: Easy Grammar Grade 6 Teacher Edition and Daily Grams Grade 6 Teacher Edition.
- WRITING: Excellence in Writing – Student Writing Intensive Level B
- HANDWRITING: Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Grade 6.
General Goals: Students will read grade level material fluently with expression, taking punctuation into account. Students will demonstrate informative, narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and a multi-page research paper utilizing the writing process of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Students will identify the subject and predicate of simple, complex and compound sentences, and will learn the function of all 8 parts of speech, and the proper use of end punctuation, commas and the semicolon. Given oral presentation of subject matter, students will identify and share main points, and copy from visually presented material. Students will participate in classroom and small group discussion with relevance. Students will be taught spelling based on phonetic families and spelling rules. Students will give oral reports of 4-5 minutes.
Goals By Term
Term 1 –
- READING: Witch of Blackbird Pond – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide. Also introduce writing a book report using Maniac Magee as a demonstration. Students will write a book report on a work of historical fiction from early American history (colonial period – Civil War), and will give a 2-4 minute oral presentation. Read Aloud: Journey to the New World by Kathryn Lasky.
- SPELLING: Units 1-9 (Skip Unit 6)
- GRAMMAR: Writing sentences, Punctuation, Capitalization.
- WRITING: Introduce Key-word Outlines, Dress-ups: Writing Focus: Narrative writing cuminating in an original, illustrated story.
- HANDWRITING: 3 pages per week.
Term 2 –
- READING: Johnny Tremain – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide. Students will write a book report on a work of historical fiction from early American history (colonial period – Civil War), and will give a 2-4 minute oral presentation. Read Aloud: Standing in the Light by Mary Pope Osborne
- SPELLING: Units 10-18
- GRAMMAR: Prepositions, Verbs.
- WRITING: Continue Key-word Outlines, Dress-ups: Writing Focus: Informational writing, culminating in a “Mini-Book” research paper.
- HANDWRITING: 3 pages per week.
Term 3 –
- READING: Amos Fortune Freeman – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide. Students will write a book report on a work of BIOGRAPHY from early American history (colonial period – Civil War), and will give a 2-4 minute oral presentation. Read Aloud: Lydie by Katherine Paterson.
- SPELLING: Units 19-27
- GRAMMAR: Interjections & Conjunctions, Nouns, Adjectives, Adverbs.
- WRITING: Writing Focus: Informative writing – State Report.
- HANDWRITING: 3 pages per week.
Term 4 –
- READING: Number the Stars – read the whole book and use the Progeny Press Study Guide. Read Aloud: The Ballad of Lucy Whipple by Karen Cushman.
- SPELLING: Units 28-35
- GRAMMAR: Important Words, Pronouns.
- WRITING: Writing Focus: Informative writing – Research Paper.
- HANDWRITING: 3 pages per week.
Math
Texts: Silver-Burdett-Ginn, Mathematics Grade 6, Mad Minute, by Addison-Wesley Publishing.
General Goals: Students will achieve proficiency in the following content areas: Students will be computationally proficient in fractions and mixed numbers, decimals to 2 places, percents and measures of central tendency. Students will learn to adequately solve integer operations, one step equations and measure/calculate basic geometric shapes. Students will further develop problem solving skills by evaluating contextually based word problems and critical thinking scenarios.

Bible
Texts: Positive Action Grade 6 Bible Workbook – Winning the Race, Doctrine Questions and Answers, Bible.
General Goals: Drawing from the entire Word of God, students learn that the principles of God specifically affect their lives. Studies are drawn from characters in bothe the Old and New Testaments and the life of Christ. An overview of the book of Revelation is included. Students are also expected to review the Doctrine Question and Answers. Students will memorize scripture passages in the indicated term.
Goals By Term

Term 2 –(Lessons 9-18). Memory Passage: Romans 12: 1-2, 9-21

Science
Texts: ACSI Purposeful Design Grade 6
General Goals: Students will use the ACSI Purposeful Design 6 materials. Students will explore the following sciences: Life Science, Physical Science, Earth & Space Science, & Human Body.
Goals By Term
Term 1 – Life Science: Classification, Cell Processes, Heredity & Genetics.
Term 2 – Physical Science: Structure, Periodic Table of Elements, States of Matter, Motion.
Term 3 – Earth & Space Science: Ocean motion, Rock records, Violent motions, Astronomy.
Term 4 – Human Body: Decisions, Body Systems, Body Stewardship.
Social Studies
Texts: Scott-Foresman: Building a Nation, Map Skills for Today – Grade 6 – Weekly Reader Publishing.
General Goals: Students will study American history from early exploration through the Civil War. The Scott Foresman text Building a Nation will guide many activities. Students will be assessed through regular chapter tests. The year will culminate with U.S. state reports that will include individual research. Students will also write a research paper on an important figure from American history. Students will memorize all 50 US States and Capitals.
