News & Notes: September 2013

General Information:

NCA Achievement Testing.

Each year the students of NCA take a standardized achievement test in order to demonstrate their continuing academic development and for NCA to assess its academic program.  The goal of NCA is for our students to achieve in the average to above-average categories.  In April 2013 our students took the Terra Nova achievement test.  The students did exceptionally well in all grade levels and categories with most scores in the above average range.  Congratulations on work well done!

Student Advocate.

Dib and Pam Hampton have been appointed by the LCMT as alternate student advocates in addition to Jody and Marcia Riethmiller. Student advocates are adults to whom students may go with any concerns they would rather not take to a teacher or school administrator.

PNG Independence Day.

NCA Student Council will be celebrating PNG Independence day on Monday, September 16th. Classes will not be held.

Last Day of Term 1 – Sept 18.

Term 1 ends on September 18. This is a full day of school, not a half-day.

Assembly – Sept. 18  8:00 am  You are invited to come to the conference dining hall to hear what the students in Kindergarten, Second Grade, and Sixth Grade have to share with us.  We will also introduce our next spiritual goal.

Jr. & Sr. High:

PSAT. The PSAT test will be held for all Grade 11 students (It is open to but optional for Grade 10 students) on Wednesday, October 16. There is a small charge for this test (around $15 USD per student). The test prepares students for the SAT exam, and juniors who are U.S. Citizens are also automatically enrolled in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. If you would like more information about the PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship Program, call the high school office at 531-4570. If your Grade 10 student would like to take the PSAT please notify Jed at the high school office. There are a limited number of slots for Grade 10 students.

SAT. The SAT will be held at NCA on November 2. All juniors and seniors should consider registering for this test. The recommended deadline for on-line registration is September 25. The final deadline for on-line registration is October 3.  Registering for the test can most easily be done online at  If this is not feasible, or if you have any other questions, please call Jed at the high school office. The SAT will be offered again at NCA on May 3.

Varsity Sports Parents. Some of you may be aware that NCA requires our varsity athletes to submit a Sports Academic Status Check (Sports Slip) at the end of each week during each sports season.  The intent of the Sports Slip is to help our coaches know if one of their team members may be struggling in one or more classes.  This gives the coach the opportunity to flex to help keep their athletes academically eligible, rather than be surprised after Mid-Marking to find that the student failed a class and is off of the team.

If you would like us to inform you if your student athlete is “at risk” or “failing” for a given week, please let us know.  We do not routinely forward this information on to parents since we want the athlete to take responsibility for this, but we do realize that some parents are being kept out of the loop by their kids.  Please contact the HS Secretary at if you would like to be notified.

Spiritual Emphasis Weekend (SEW). NCA’s annual Spiritual Emphasis Weekend (SEW) for 2013 will be held for Grade 9-12 students on October 17-20. Jr. High (Grade 7 & 8) SEW will be October 18-19.  We are excited once again to have  Seth Emery and his team coming to run our program this year. We are looking forward to seeing the Lord work in our kids’ hearts again. Your prayers for the weekend are appreciated!
