News & Notes: September 2014

General Information:

NCA Achievement Testing.

Each year the students of NCA take a standardized achievement test in order to demonstrate their continuing academic development and for NCA to assess its academic program. The goal of NCA is for our students to achieve in the average to above-average categories. In April 2014 our students took the Terra Nova achievement test. The students did exceptionally well in all grade levels and categories with most scores in the above average range. Congratulations on work well done!

Student Advocates.

The Riethmillers (Jody & Marcia) and the Hamptons (Dib & Pam) have been appointed by the LCMT as student advocates for this school year. Student advocates are adults who have been trained to serve in this role and provide students with someone to go to with any concerns they might have. Our hope is that all student have some adult(s) in their lives in which they can confide, but the Lapilo Centre leadership wanted to create this safety net for kids who may not.

PNG Independence Day.

NCA Student Council will be celebrating PNG Independence Day on Tuesday, September 16th. Classes will not be held. Our Independence Day celebrations are going to look a little different this year. We’re going to have some prelude music starting at 8:50, flag raising & national anthem at 9:00 followed by the parade. From about 10:00 – 12:00 we will have approx. 6 singsing groups performing in the field. Booths and events will run from about noon to 3:00 pm. The Junior class plans to sell hotdogs, cupcakes and soda and there will be other kai bar type vendors. NCA families arriving by vehicle should use the main gate and find parking either up by the gym or in front of the HQ offices. We would ask our NCA families to NOT invite guests unless they are from the local community (i.e. Bena Bridge to Kamiliki and across the river from us.) This celebration is really intended to be an NCA, Lapilo, Partner Missions and surrounding community event, so it will not be open to the general public from outside the local area (other than our school families.) Thanks.

Last Day of Term 1 – Sept 24.

Term 1 ends on September 24th. This is a full day of school, not a half-day.

Assembly – Sept. 10 7:45 am You are invited to come to the conference dining hall to hear what the students have to share with us.

Digicel Contact. If for some reason you need to contact someone in the elementary office using a Digicel number, please call 7175-3255.

Jr. & Sr. High:

PSAT. The PSAT test will be held for all Grade 11 students on Wednesday, October 15. There is a small charge for this test (around $17 USD per student). The test prepares students for the SAT exam, and juniors who are U.S. Citizens are also automatically enrolled in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. If you would like more information about the PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship Program, call the high school office at 7224-4978.

SAT. The SAT will be held at NCA on November 8. All juniors and seniors should consider registering for this test. The recommended deadline for on-line registration is October 2. The final deadline for on-line registration is October 9. Registering for the test can most easily be done online at If this is not feasible, or if you have any other questions, please call Jed at the high school office. The SAT will be offered again at NCA on May 2.

Spiritual Emphasis Weekend (SEW). NCA’s annual Spiritual Emphasis Weekend (SEW) for 2014 will be held for Grade 9-12 students on October 16-19 at the EBC Orobiga centre. Jr. High (Grade 7 & 8) SEW will be October 17-18 here at Lapilo. We are excited once again to have the team from Hume Lake coming to run our program this year. We are looking forward to seeing the Lord work in our kids’ hearts again. Your prayers for the weekend are appreciated!

NCA Awards Survey   We will be distributing a survey to our NCA parents and community in an effort to find out what you think about the way we do our school awards. There have been some concerns voiced about this over the past few years, so we thought it would be timely to check-in with you. If you would, please take a little time to respond honestly about your perspectives. Thanks.
