News & Notes: September 2015

General Information:

NCA Achievement Testing

Each year the students of NCA take a standardized achievement test in order to demonstrate their continuing academic development and for NCA to assess its academic program. The goal of NCA is for our students to achieve in the average to above-average categories. In April 2015 our students took the Terra Nova achievement test. The students did exceptionally well in all grade levels and categories with most scores in the above average range. Congratulations on work well done!

Permission to Use Photos

NCA uses Facebook as a recruiting tool for new teachers. We will be regularly posting pictures of classroom/school activities to Facebook which will include photos of your children. Because the point is to gain a wider audience for our page (beyond NCA alumni and parents) we would like to give you the opportunity to express any concerns about the use of pictures of your child. If you do not wish for us to ever use a photo of your child, please let us know and we will be careful to leave them out of any Facebook posts. If we do not hear from you, we will assume it is okay. We will ask at the beginning of each school year if it is still alright to include your child on Facebook.

We are hoping you would consider “liking” our page and perhaps sharing it with your friends. Every year we need teachers to come fill the gaps left by those going on home assignment. By liking and sharing posts you will help to broaden the audience for NCA’s page.

Student Advocates

The Copleys (Keith and Angie) and the Hamptons (Dib and Pam) have been appointed by the LCMT as student advocates for this school year. Student advocates are adults who have been trained to serve in this role and provide students with someone to go to with any concerns they might have. Our hope is that all students have some adult(s) in their lives in which they can confide, but the Lapilo Centre leadership wanted to create this safety net for kids who may not have someone.

PNG Independence Day

NCA Student Council will be helping to organize PNG Independence Day on Wednesday, September 16th. Classes will not be in session, but our grade 7-12 students are expected to be here to participate with their classmates. The plan is for our Independence Day celebrations to look very similar to last year. We’re going to start the flag raising and national anthem at 9:00 followed by a few musical numbers and then the parade. From about 10:00 – 12:00 we hope to have some singsing groups performing on the field. Booths and events will run from about noon to 3:00 pm. The Junior class plans to sell hotdogs, cupcakes and sodas and there will be other kai bar type vendors. NCA families arriving by vehicle should use the main gate and find parking either up by the gym or in front of the HQ offices. We would ask our NCA families to NOT invite guests unless they are from the local community (i.e. Bena Bridge to Kamiliki and across the river from us). This celebration is really intended to be an NCA, Lapilo, partner missions and surrounding community event, so it will not be open to the general public from outside the local area (other than our school families). Thanks.

Last Day of Term 1 – Sept 30.

Term 1 ends on September 30th. This is a full day of school, not a half-day.

English Correspondence FAQ

What’s the deal with proctors?

Your student needs a proctor in order to take the Progress Tests at the end of Units 2, 4, and 6. This proctor has to be locally approved by Miss Green. If you need approval or if you are having trouble finding a proctor, please let her know. If you have turned in proctor information to UNHS and you or your proctor still have questions, please contact UNHS at

What grading scale is used by UNHS?

The grading scale below is published in the UNHS Getting Started materials.

A+        98-100

A          93-97

B+        90-92

B          85-89

C+        82-84

C          77-81

D+        74-76

D          70-73

Spiritual Emphasis Weekend (SEW).

NCA’s annual Spiritual Emphasis Weekend (SEW) for 2015 will be held for Grade 9-12 students on November 12-15 at the EBC Orobiga Centre. We are still uncertain of the dates for Grades 7 and 8. We are excited once again to have the team from Hume Lake coming to run our program this year. We are looking forward to seeing the Lord work in our kids’ hearts again. Your prayers for the weekend are appreciated!
