News & Notes: December 2015

General:
NCA Christmas Concert will be held on Friday, December 11th, at 7 pm. Come and enjoy the celebration of Christmas with our elementary students and band members.

NCA Drama Production will be held on Saturday, December 12th. There will be two performances: a matinee at 3:00 pm and an evening performance at 7:00 pm. Tickets will NOT be “sold”, but reservations will be required to limit the audience size for each performance to around 100 for each. Details about how to make your reservations will be forthcoming. Thank you for supporting our Drama Club!

NCA Health Reminder: Please remember if your child has been out of school with an illness they need to be fever free and symptom free for at least 24 hours before they return. We realize that students usually don’t want to do tons of make-up work, but we want to help control the spread of these illnesses to the rest of the healthy school community. Thanks for your consideration.

Town “Bus” drivers – We want to remind you that the Lapilo Centre SPEED LIMIT is 20 km/h. Please, for the safety of our students and community, stay within the speed limit as you drive on our centre roads. Thanks.

Travel Plans: Sometimes families consider travel plans that may cause their children to miss some days of school. If you find yourself in this situation, please contact the administration if at all possible before purchasing any tickets. It will be to your child’s benefit to check with the school before definite dates are set or tickets are purchased. We are more flexible for situations where it is for reasons outside of your control, but if it is simply an elective choice, you may have to deal with some consequences that could have been avoided by simply having kept us in the loop.

Assistance during school break: The school admin team will be checking emails during the school break, so if you need to contact someone about school matters feel free to send an email or call one of the numbers below. The school will also continue to provide internet access for students working on English correspondence courses. We plan to have scheduled sessions in the mornings. Please contact the high school to schedule a time for this at least one day in advance. ( 7999-0707 or NCA mobile: 7224-4978)

Elementary:
Elementary Assembly – December 9th – Everyone is invited to come to the elementary assembly in the conference dining hall, starting at 7:45 am, to hear what the students have to share with us.

Elementary students will be released early on Dec 15th (1:55 pm) and Dec 16th (12:10 pm) due to the longer work detail for the high school during the exam schedule.

Semester exams cover material from Terms 1 and 2. Please encourage your high school student to spend adequate time preparing for exams as they are weighted 20% of the semester grade. For all exams, students are to remain in the room during the entire scheduled time. At the teacher’s discretion, students may bring extra study materials or personal reading material to use if they finish their exam early. If a student has a scheduled study hall during a 2-hour exam period, they may stay and study quietly in the library, or stay at home – one place or the other.

Post-HS Planning: NCA will have a post-HS planning meeting at 7 pm on Thursday, January 21st in M3. It is designed to be most helpful for current juniors and their parents, but sophomores who will be in their home countries over the summer or seniors that don’t have a plan may also find it beneficial.

Also, BJU Press offers an online program called Career Direct that some grade 10-12 students may find helpful. It is designed to point students to colleges and careers that fit their mix of personality traits, interests, skills, and values. It is $75 and can be purchased and accessed through bjupress.com/go/careerdirectonline.

Grade 9-12 English Correspondence FAQ
What is the role of a proctor again?
Proctors are responsible for administering closed-book progress tests to UNHS students. Proctors get their own login information in order to access these tests. This login information should be kept secure and not shared. Proctors must make sure a student is not using any course material during the test. They also are responsible for keeping the test after the session; tests should be destroyed when the student has completed the course. Proctors may also provide the student with the test results after the answers have been submitted to the system.

What if we need to change proctors?
You and your student may need to change proctors for a variety of reasons, however you should know that your student can only have one proctor at a time. If you need to change proctors, please have your student request a Local School Approval form from the high school office. Once you have filled in the required student information and proctor information, return it to the high school office for approval. It will be returned to your student and then you must return it to UNHS. The new proctor should have their login information delivered electronically within a day. You should also provide them with information about their role as a proctor. If you need a new proctor for the Christmas break, then this process should be completed by the last day of the term.
