News & Notes: January 2016

General Information:

New/Returning Students. Please welcome the following students who are now attending NCA: Karsen Estelle (11th), Adam Unrau (10th), Katie Unrau (9th), Carly Unrau (5th), Nick Unrau (4th), Nathan Venter (2nd), Hailey Venter (Kindergarten), and Samuel Pekorifa (Kindergarten).

Pray for 2016-17 staffing. We would appreciate your prayers for staff for NCA for 2016-17. We have needs in HS Math, HS Science, HS English, HS Bible, HS Industrial Arts, the Elementary Library, and all levels of PE, Music, and Art. There are some elementary teachers interested in coming next year. We pray that everything will come together in good time for them to join us at NCA.

Assembly – January 27th – 7:45 – Conference Dining Hall – Come for the assembly which marks the beginning of Reading Festival! You won’t want to miss the Living Book Reports from some of the classes. We will also have an assembly on February 10th, when we will hear results of the Reading Festival and more Living Book Reports.

Lice Check – On Friday, January 15th, the school nurse will be checking the elementary students for lice. A note will come home with your child if you need to treat them for lice.

Some changes for semester 2 – We are happy to have Mrs. Jex as our Kindergarten teacher for semester two! Also in semester two elementary students will be having art class once a week with Mrs. Sogavo. (Elementary Technology class is finished for this school year.) There are several changes in the PE classes: Grade 1 PE will be taught by Mrs. Buortesch for term 3, Grade 2/3 PE will be taught by Mrs. Mol, Miss Austin will be teaching Grade 4/5 PE, and Mr. McKnight will continue to teach Grade 6 PE, but that class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 11:20 – 12:10. Grades 4/5 and 6 will be getting some basic instruction in karate from Mrs. Copley during the first 4 weeks of this term in their PE classes.

Jr. & Sr. High:

Adding or dropping courses. Grade 9-12 students may now add or drop courses for second semester. The “add” deadline is Friday, January 15th. The “drop” deadline is Wednesday, February 3rd. Students are required to carry 6 credits for the year (including correspondence courses).

Grades 7 and 8 parent meeting. Mothers of 7th and 8th grade girls and fathers of 7th and 8th grade boys are asked to attend a meeting with their student on Monday, January 18 from 7:45 to 8:30. An email was sent out with details of the meeting, but if you have any questions please contact the high school office before Monday.

Reminder! Items left outside. Because of the high cost of replacing instruments, textbooks, etc., any items that belong to the school (textbooks, calculators, instruments, etc.) that are left outside after hours will be held in the office and subject to a K5 fine and then returned to the student. Items left out that belong to students are not subject to a fine. Please remind your kids to keep track of the items for which they are responsible. Thanks.

Post-High School Planning meeting. A Post-HS planning meeting is scheduled for January 21 at 7 pm in room M3. The primary focus of this meeting is college / university entrance considerations. While we strongly encourage all 11th grade students (and their parents) to attend, anyone is welcome, particularly 10th grade students (or parents) who want to get a head start on college preparation.

Transitions Week! We are excited to be hosting Transitions Week with Libby Stephens from February 8th through the 13th. All K-12 students will be learning from Libby at school and we will be offering several seminars for parents. Be on the lookout next week for a special edition of News and Notes outlining all the special events of that week.
