January 2018

General Information

New and Returning Students

Please welcome the following students who are now attending NCA: Danielle Watson (1), Alana Watson (3), Fiona Friesen (3), Katie Watson (4), Ben Friesen (5), Joseph Friesen (6), and Amo Smith (7).

Reading Festival

Reading Festival is January 31st through February 14th. There will be something for everyone! More details to come via email and in classrooms.

Transitions Week!

We are excited to be hosting Transitions Week with Libby Stephens during the week of February 19. Be on the lookout for a special edition of News and Notes outlining all the events for students and parents.

Our next elementary assembly is scheduled for January 31 at 7:45 am. It will be the kick-off for Reading Festival!

PE Shoes and Attire

Please make sure your child has and wears a pair of closed-toe shoes for PE. Sneakers are preferable, but anything protecting the toes is sufficient. If you are unable to provide closed-toe shoes, please contact the office so we can help you figure out a solution. We don’t want any students to miss out on PE because they don’t have the proper footwear.

Elementary students are not required to change clothes for PE, but they may do so if they like. If they choose to change, they need to wear sports shorts to the knee and a t-shirt. If you have questions about what is appropriate, please contact Robyn Green at .

Lice Check

Lice checks will be completed in the first weeks of school. If your child needs to be treated, we will let you know.

Jr. & Sr. High

Post-HS Planning

NCA will have a post-HS planning meeting at 7 pm on Thursday, January 25 in M3. It is designed to be most helpful for current grade 11 students and their parents, but grade 10 students who will be in their home countries over the summer or grade 12 students that don’t have a plan may also find it beneficial.

New Teachers

We have several new teachers at the high school. Karissa Long will be teaching grade 7 and 8 English, Kathy Mark will be facilitating grade 7 and 8 Earth Science, Courtney Shontere will be teaching grade 7 and 8 Tok Pisin, and Claudia Hernandez will be teaching Spanish 1. Please welcome them.

Boys in grades 9-12 may try-out for basketball on January 29 and 30. The season will then run through the end of the term.

We will not have a girls’ soccer team this term because we do not have enough girls to field a team. However, Sarah Hoge and Paul McKnight will be offering Soccer Workshops from 3:55 until 5:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting January 30 and ending the last week of term. The intent of these workshops is to provide an opportunity for girls to develop their soccer skills in anticipation of being on a team in 2019. These workshops will be available for girls in grades 8-12. Girls need to commit to coming for the duration, as the workshops will not work with varying or unknown numbers in attendance.

Since this will not be a soccer team, the group of girls that gather for the workshops will not play games with local teams (there may be games against moms or junior highers), will not have a team dinner or be recognized in the yearbook or at Awards Night, and will not attend tournaments. Girls will not receive credit toward graduation for their participation. The girls will complete weekly academic checks and as per policy, have to maintain passing grades at MMP to continue participating in this extracurricular activity.

Please contact a member of the NMT if you have questions.
