August 2018

General Information:

New Elementary Students. New elementary students or even those who have been gone for home assignment are welcome and encouraged to come to the school between 10 am and 12 noon on Monday, August 6. This will be a come-and-go time with no set program. Students will have the opportunity to see where their classrooms are, meet the teachers, and ask questions before school starts.

New High School Students. Any new NCA grade 8-12 students and parents are invited to the New Student Orientation on the Monday before school starts, August 6, at 10 am. We will meet in the high school science classroom. We will give you your schedule and orient you to your classrooms and routines.

Grade 7 Orientation. Grade 7 students and parents are invited to the Grade 7 Orientation the Monday before school starts, August 6, at 4:30 pm.  We will meet in the high school library. We will walk through your schedules and orient you to your classrooms and junior high routines!

Grade 9 Orientation. Grade 9 students and parents are invited to the Grade 9 Orientation on Tuesday, August 7 at 3:15. We will meet in the high school library. We know that most of our grade 9 students know the routines of the high school, but we’d like to take some time to explain what makes senior high different than junior high.

Immunizations. If you are new to NCA or if your child has turned 12 in the last year, please update your immunization record through the NTM Clinic. You can make an appointment with a nurse to do this by contacting the NTM clinic.

REMINDER! Pick up and Drop off.  The road in front of the school will be closed to through traffic during school hours. This minimizes the amount of noise around the school and is safer for our students as they move between buildings and the playground. The procedure is for vehicles to drive up the hill from the main gate to the second road and drop off their passengers at the corner just above the gym. Please then drive up the hill, turn left and follow the road back down to the gate. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have questions please call the high school office.

Libraries.  We are excited to be able to provide library access for the school students and the community. If you checked out library books over the summer, please be sure to return them when you return to school.

Needed Supplies. A reminder that students are asked to have a pair of inside shoes that can be left in the classroom (shoes that are easy to get on and off), an NCA school hat for recess and outdoor activities, and a regular (large) sized box of tissues for the classroom. All other school supplies will be provided.

Starting School. Classes begin at 7:45 am on Tuesday, August 7. A bell rings at 7:35 to indicate that students can come to their classrooms and porches and prepare for the day. Please supervise children before this time.

Lunch. Elementary students will be dismissed at 12:10 for lunch. For our non-Lapilo students, a supervised lunchtime is available. A microwave is also available near the lunch pavilion for meal items that need to be heated. For Lapilo students who go home for lunch, elementary students may return to the playground after 12:55 pm. Classes begin again promptly at 1:00 pm.

Assembly. Our first assembly of the year will be Wednesday, August 8 at 7:45 am in the Conference Dining Hall.  Please join us if you can.

Lice Checks. Lice checks will be completed on Friday, August 10. A notice will come home with your child if you need to treat for lice.

Parent Teacher Fellowship. Please join us on Monday, August 13 at 7 pm for the Elementary Parent Night / Open House. We will begin in the Conference Dining Hall. We will then allow time for you to visit your child’s classroom and meet their teacher. This is a time for the parents to hear from the teachers about the curriculum, expectations for the students, and exciting activities for the year.

Jr. & Sr. High:

First Week Chapel. School begins with chapel at 7:45 AM on Tuesday, August 7. We will start the year together in the gym. Students will receive their schedules during this time.

Sports Try-Outs. Try-outs for girls’ touch rugby and boys’ volleyball will be on Wednesday and Thursday, August 8 and 9, at 3:55. Students in grades 9-12 can try-out for extracurricular sports.

Grade 8-12 Open House. The Grade 8-12 Open House on August 20 at 7 pm is a time for parents to visit their child’s teachers and classrooms. We will meet in the high school library where we will orient parents to various high school routines and procedures and issue schedules. We will then run through a schedule so that you may hear from each of your child’s teachers. Again, any questions, please call the high school office.

Study Hall Release. Students in grades 7-12 can complete study hall at home rather than at the school. Parents need to commit to having their student home every day during the designated study hall. In the first few days of school, we’ll send home agreements to be signed and returned for students to take advantage of this time.

Technology AUP.  In the first few days of school, students will come home with a Technology Acceptable Use Policy agreement for parents and students to read and sign before students will be allowed on the internet. Please take a moment to read through this form with your child. Remember all internet use is under the supervision of a faculty or staff member.
